I had blood drawn on Oct. 31 for the litany of tests they do regularly on us pancreatically challenged. Everything looked good, but honestly there is really only one test I ever care about: the HbA1c (Glycosylated Hemoglobin)
The ADA recommends < 7
My Doctor recommends < 6
Personally I strive for < 7
Last January my A1c was 7.0, and I was pretty happy with that result, but this time I was particularly interested in the result. You see, this test tells you how your control has been the previous 3 months or so (the life of the red blood cell), and that's exactly how long I've been using the Continuous Glucose Monitor. So, I wanted to see if my out-of-pocket investment in this device is paying off, and since I've been tracking the numbers, and calculate an estimated A1c, I wanted to see if my predictions were fairly accurate. My estimate was showing 5.9 to 6.0 around that time, and I was really hoping to be at 6.0... the result... *drumroll please*
5.8
I am ecstatic! I think this may be the best result I’ve ever had on this test since being diagnosed in Oct. 1991. And the CGMS is certainly a big help - dropping my A1c 1.2 points in 3 months (my estimates show me at 7.0 in Aug when I started) is incredible. It means my average blood glucose has gone from 150 to 114!
TIME TO CELEBRATE LIFE!
5.8-ing,
Jamie, The Diabetic Runner

Isn’t it great when you plan for something and it comes to fruition in a very positive way?
Congratulations, friend! Success!
That is an AWESOME A1C. My best was 6.3 while training for the Marine Corp Marathon last year. I hope to get to your numbers some day. This is an excellent site and will visit it often. Keep up the good work.
Now THAT’s an impressive number! Further proof that those who try the hardest will benefit most from CGM. Well done!
Congrats Jamie. Hope you can get back to back
Hi I made my way over from Tudiabetes. Awesome A1c! And interesting blog. I like seeing how D and sports get along. Mind if I put you on my blogroll?
Thanks Daena! and by all means please do, in fact I’m going to add you to mine!
